Sunset in Santa Fe

“You know the air is so clear out here,
At night you oughta see the Milky Way.
You oughta take a break. Come out and visit.
You ought to spend Christmas in Santa Fe”
Well, I hung up the phone and my mind went sailing
Through the living room and out the front door
I’d hit the road heading west from Richmond
And zip past Charlottesville on 64
Six hours and I’m past Bristol;
Through Tennessee by the end of the day.
Tip my hat to the Mississippi,
Heading out west toward Santa Fe
When you’re stuck in the east coast rat race
That drains your soul like a stint all day
Even if it’s only a contemplation
I wanna see the sunset in Santa Fe.
On the east coast everybody’s pale
From working in an office building every day
But when you go west, everybody’s tanned
From working in the sunlight of Santa Fe
Everybody’s cool and everybody’s artsy
They all ride mountain bikes and ski the slopes
Everybody lives in a house of adobe
And everybody there knows a Navaho
Spend the second night in Amarillo
Have steak and eggs when I leave the next day
Four hours later I’m in Albuquerque
Heading up north toward Santa Fe
When you’re stuck in this east coast rat race
Drains your soul like a stint all day
Even if it’s only contemplation
I wanna see the sunset in Santa Fe
Well, I heaved a deep sigh, picked up the phone,
Called up my friends, said, “Thanks anyway.
I don’t have the time and I don’t have the money,
But I’m gonna keep dreaming of Santa Fe.”
Like, walking out with my friends on the mesa,
Under the stars of the Milky Way.
One of these days I’m gonna make it happen,
And spend a little time in Santa Fe.
When you’re caught in this east coast rat race,
That drains your soul like a stint all day,
Even if it’s only a contemplation,
I like to think of sunsets in Santa Fe.
