Cherokee Road

I’m way over here
And you’re way over there.
I can only imagine
The snow in the air.
And the way that it falls
Real soft and slow
And softens the lights
On Cherokee Road.
And there’s music in the parlor
And wine both dry and wet
And I can well imagine
How your table is set.
And there’s laughter in the kitchen
And supper’s on the stove
The smell is in the air
Out on Cherokee Road
I wish that I could crush the distance and bring you close to me
I wish I’d never crossed so many miles
I wish that I could go this Christmas and leave this place behind
And come and feel the warm glow of your smiles
That give the shimmer to the light
On Cherokee Road.
In the middle of the river
There’s a water borne fleur-de-lis
And I can well imagine
The branches of your trees
They arch like a cathedral
Up over your portico
that shines welcome light
On Cherokee Road
Now, I’m not too sentimental
It’s rare that I shed tears
But sometimes I imagine
Through the memory of those years
How we’d gather ‘round the table
And chatter and cuss and crow
and bask in the warm light
Of Cherokee Road
